brooklands care home
Brooklands Care Home for older
people is a large Victorian House standing
in its own grounds just a few hundred yards
from the centre of the historic market town
of Selby.
The house has enjoyed a varied
history since becoming a nursing home in the
1960s and was largely destroyed by a fire
around the turn of the century. Many local
people knew it as a school in the 1940s and
it is often referred to as ‘Jumbo Castle’
in memory of its original owner, believed
to be a tea merchant, who built the house
in the late 19th century.
Many of the house’s original
features, including the ceilings, ornate covings,
and stained glass windows in the main house
have all been retained along with the staircase
and large landing which is popular with those
seeking quiet relaxation.
Having undergone extensive
refurbishment and redecoration, the home has
19 beds for nursing older people and 28 beds
dedicated to caring for residents with dementia.
Brooklands has a dedicated activities organiser
and we enjoy regular visits to the home by
local school children and choristers from
the Cathedral.
